Day 1 |
Chail: Nestling in the shelter of
virgin forests that cover many un-toddle hills, Chail (2226 m ) is a tiny
resort in the Shiwalik region of Himachal Pradesh. Happily isolated from the
rest of Himachal, Chail is a place where time stands still, nature is
at her exuberant best and words like pollution and deforestation have never
entered the dictionary of people living here. Chail has interesting
history. Originally, it was a part of Keonthal State. Then it came under the
sway of the Gorkha warrior Amer Singh. Finally, it became a royal resort and
summer seat of Maharaja Patiala.

Visit Highest Cricket Ground (3 kms) : Built in 1893, after leveling
the top of hill, this stands at 2444 m and is the highest cricket pitch in
the world.
Visit Sidh Baba Temple (3 kms): Maharaja Bhupinder Singh
originally began building his Palace at this site. It is said
that a Sidh, saintly person appeared before the Maharaja in a dream and
declared that this was the place where he had meditated, Bhupinder Singh
shifted his Palace and also had this temple built.

proceed to Peach Blossom-Fagu for over night stay.
On way see
Rhododendron Flower Tree (State Flower) and lunch at Café Lalit,
Kufri.
Visit Himlayan
National Park, Kufri which has several animals of
the area including bears and musk deers.
Visit the
Mahasu Peak : Rises above Kufri and makes a good
hike. The view from the top is magnificent.
Fagu:
Fagu is a tiny village that rest astride a mountain saddle along the
Hindustan Tibet Road. The location gives it a rare range of views that
encompass both its northern and southern valleys and the snow-clad peaks of
the Greater Himalaya. In the open patches, the valleys hold tiny hamlets,
orchards and neatly terraced fields while the area is covered with forests
of deodar (Himalayan cedar) and spruce. Exhaustively rebuilt as a deluxe

Afternoon visit
Giriganga (7 kms) is an enjoyable one through thick deodar woods. This
is the source of the river Giri Ganga (also called the Giri) that just below
the Kupar peak. The river pours its waters into the mighty Yamuna and there
is a small graceful shrine at the spot.

After breakfast
proceed to The Chanshal, Rohru for lunch and over night stay. On way
visit Mata Hatkoti Temple to pay obeisance to the Goddess.
Hatkoti
(29 km, 1400 m). On the right bank of the river Pabbar,
this has the classical temples of Hatkoti, executed in the nagara style are
a major attraction. The primary temple is that of Devi Durga in her form of
Mahishasuramardini, the slayer of the demon Mahisa who stalked the
world in the form of a buffalo and the Devi is locally known as `Hateshwari’.
Rohru
Past Rohru is scenically attractive Chhaupari. This is
secluded spot and has a long ridge that holds a small temple. The view from
this point is magnificent and there is a grand display of the peaks of
neighboring Uttranchal, as well as those of Kinnaur.

Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery has
become a refuge for artists and art lovers. It served as a residence to
Russian Artist Professor Nichloas Roerich that has been converted into a
gallery, which houses a right collection of masterpieces. Roerich,
after spending a lifetime traveling mountain road, settled in nagger and
confessed that Kullu valley was the best in all Himalaya.

Visit Guru
Ghantal Monastery (8 kms), Kharding (5 kms), Shashur (3
kms)
Guru Ghantal Monastery (8 kms. 3,020)
This lies high over the confluence of the rivers Chandra and
Bhaga and is regarded as the oldest monastery in Lahaul. Two great figures
of rans Himalayan Buddhism were associated with it – Padmasambhava and
Rinchensang-po.
Khardang (5 kms) This is one of
the most revered places of the Drug-pa (Red Hat) sect, it has a large
library and is also the repository of some exquisite thangka
paintings, musical instruments and old weapons.
Shashur (3 kms) This monastery is surrounded by a rare patch of
woodland and was founded in the seventeenth century by Deva Gyatso. The
festival of Shashur Tseshe is held every June/July when monks dressed in
masks and colourful costumes perform dances. The monastery is known for the
images and paintings it houses.

Palampur is a town founded by

retained Palampur as a right place for tea plantations since colonial days.
The quaint landscape filled with meticulously maintained tea gardens is very

rivulets, streams and brooks that are all full of life. White ranges of
Dhauladhar mountains for a background give the place a magnificent

located on the right bank of river Baner (also called Banganga), a tributary
of river Beas. Holy waters of Baner have been converged into a man made
bathing ghat for pilgrims to take a holy dip in. A temple glorifying Lord
Shiva as Nandikeshwar in the temple complex is equally revered.

Jawalamukhi:
Jawalamukhi is a very famous pilgrimage town,
revered for the gold domed temple that does not house idol. Instead
the eternal goddess here is manifest in a natural blue flame emanating from
holy rock sanctum that has been burning so for centuries. Shaktipeeth
legends hold Jawalamukhi as the place where the half burnt tongue of Sati
fell. The great Mughal emperor Akbar in circa. 16th century
walked to pay obeisance at Jawalamukhi and Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab
in the 19th century gilded the temple dome in gold.

After lunch
proceed to Chintpurni and pay obeisance to goddess. Evening tea, dinner and
over night stay at The Chintpurni Heights, Bharwain.
Chintpurni
(975 m) on the Shivalik ranges in lower Himalayas,
Chintpurni is a popular Shaktpeeth pilgrimage centre. Here `Chinnimasika
Devi - The Goddess without a Head is worshiped in an anthropomorphic
form. The headless `Pindi’ of the Devi is worshiped at this temple that was
built in 15th century. The associated Shaktipeeth legend holds
that it was the severed feet of Sati which fell at Chintpurni and gave birth
to this holy shrine. The auspicious `Navratra’ days in March-April and
September-October attract thousands of pilgrims to Chintpurni from all over
the country.

proceed to Chamundaji on way visit Brijeshwari Temple at Kangra. Evening

Chamunda Mata Temple during Arti time.
